Annual Representative Assembly Committee
Welcome to the Annual Representative Assembly Committee page.
The Annual Representative Assembly, or ARA, is the legislative body of the Provincial Association. It reviews and determines the policy of the Association and approves the operating budget. It is held annually on the Victoria Day weekend in May. The location alternates between Edmonton and Calgary.
Local 38 has an ARA committee composed of eight of your colleagues. It meets approximately six times during the school year to consider Local resolutions, delegate lists, and Local responses to the budget and resolutions proposed by the provincial Association. You can have input by submitting resolutions about any issue pertaining to the teaching profession. The committee considers these resolutions and shepherds them through the process of getting them approved for submission to the ARA itself.
ARA delegates represent their locals and collectively represent the public and separate teachers of Alberta. They provide leadership to the teaching profession by examining the ATA’s annual budget and all proposed policy resolutions at delegate meetings held prior to the ARA.
Teachers interested in being delegates can apply to the Local. The application form, available from your school representative, must be filled out and sent in by mid December (refer to application form). Criteria based in our local policy govern who can be chosen. Those selected attend the meetings and Assembly to speak on behalf of their membership. All delegates receive a per diem for the pre-ARA meetings, and additional money to cover their expenses when they attend the ARA.
If you have any further questions, please contact the ARA Committee or the Local office.
