Lines of Communication

by Richard Sherry

Calgarians are more Internet and email savvy than most people in the world.  And I’m sure Calgary Public teachers are connected at an even higher rate.  After all, virtually all Calgary Public teachers – finally, including substitute teachers – have at least a CBE email address and access to the Internet at school.

This is why your Local is moving away from paper-based communication and towards an Internet and email-based approach.  Recently you’ve seen President Larry Liffiton use the “all-teachers” email privilege provided by the CBE.  As time goes on, these emails will increasingly direct you to our website where interesting notices, current events, and links to helpful resources will be found.

Local 38 is working with Provincial ATA to develop an improved website.  We hope to unveil it in June.  Many components of our current website will be unchanged, and many others will be added. We are part of the Provincial ATA’s TNET project, which promises very easy access to many resources valuable to teachers.  For an overview of TNET, please click here.

Finally, we have two other really interesting projects on the go.

First, we want to design a new logo for the local.  The one at the top, left-hand side of the web sitereally doesn’t say, “Calgary Public Teachers,” does it?  We’ll soon be inviting you to come up with a new design.

Second, we have received a grant for a community relations project.  The Executive Committee has decided to build a float for the world famous Calgary Stampede Parade.  This is so exciting!  We want – and need – lots of participation from Calgary Public teachers, so keep on eye out for our call to action!

In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding your Local’s website or other communications issues, please contact me at communications@ata38.ab.ca.

And please, consider writing an article for ATA Glance telling us all about the interesting and fantastic things Calgary Public teachers are doing.  We really need to tell ourselves our own stories.
