Peter Pan Performance
By Sue Stevenson Brown, Assistant Principal
Once again the students at Glamorgan exceeded themselves in their recent performance of Peter Pan. All classes participated in this musical interpretation of JM Barrie's original classic, Peter Pan, with a “Glamorgan” twist. A collection of songs, musical instrument ensemble and drama thrilled close to 1500 people over three nights and one dress rehearsal. Throughout the performance preparation, curriculum connections were lived throughout the school as classes explored the possibilities of shadows, treasure maps and mapping, creative story writing, the life works of J.M. Barrie, and more.
Supporting every great performance are the people behind the scenes who work tirelessly on behalf of our students. The staff at Glamorgan have amazing talents and contributed countless hours in rewriting this epic tale, coaching our lead cast members, training our Mony Mony dancers, choreographing the lead pirates, sewing costumes, crafting props, painting and designing scenery, taking workshops to master theatre lighting, creating the program, and setting up and taking down equipment. This enormous feat could not have been accomplished without the collaboration of all staff who were willing to give their time and enthusiasm for such an event.
Huge gratitude must go to our parents and our community at large. Several parents held key roles in supporting both our students and staff in behind the scenes activities such as ensuring their children were in attendance for countless practices, creating the fabulous puppets, being available all three nights to apply make up to over 150 students, gathering additional resources, generously donating materials and assisting with supervision and costume changes. This event showed the true spirit of building community and the power of collective effort!
Many other visitors in nearby communities and those who traveled farther a field saw our performance. Several family members flew into Calgary for this event helping to make it even more special. We were delighted to host several neighboring schools who accepted our invitation and joined us for our dress rehearsal! A special thank you to all our volunteers, Mount Royal students, grandparents, and former colleagues who made a concerted effort to support our work.
