What is the Local 38 ReconciliACTION Research Grant?

The Local 38 ReconciliACTION Research Grant is a research grant in the amount of $7000 for the purpose of supporting a one-year project in collaboration with neighbouring Indigenous communities to create a research article or report that offers practical guidance to teachers on pedagogical strategies that engage and enhance the learning of Indigenous students, especially in light of the cross-generational trauma perpetuated by the residential school system.

 

Who is eligible?

One or more of the applicants/co-applicants must be a member of one of the following groups:

  • All faculty of education academic staff (including sessional lecturers) from Alberta universities or from university colleges recognized by the ATA who have undertaken relevant research
  • Graduate or post-graduate students from Alberta universities or from university colleges recognized by the ATA who have undertaken relevant research
  • Individuals who are currently members of ATA Local 38 (Calgary Public Teachers)

 

What are the criteria?

The research must meet the following criteria:

  • Be directly related to pedagogical strategies that engage and enhance the learning of indigenous students in primary and/or secondary school settings
  • Recognize Indigenous ways of being, knowing, belonging and doing
  • Acknowledge
    • the (negative) influence/impact of past and present colonial systems/educational practices, and/or
    • the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission or Calls To Action
  • Be of practical benefit to teachers in improving their professional practice
  • Must involve some degree of collaboration with Indigenous communities/nations/individuals
  • Be current (either ongoing or completed within the last two years)
  • Be of high quality in terms of purpose, methodology, and originality

Preference shall be given to research that is led by one or more members of Local 38 (Calgary Public Teachers).

The researcher(s) must be prepared to present the research to various groups within the Association.

 

Anticipated Deliverables

  • Scholarly article and/or report suitable for publication in academic journals
  • Presentation of work to members through workshops/presentations/sharing circles/etc and other non-colonial formats

 

How will the recipient be determined?

A selection panel consisting of five educators (four Local representatives and one other individual) will meet in late September to review the applications and to select a potential recipient. The panel will forward the name to the Local 38 Executive Committee, which will make the final decision.
